One of the most monumental attractions in the citadel is the complex around the To Mieu temple which has beautiful gates and quiet courtyards around it. There are also nine dynastic urns, meant to represent the power of the first nine emperors, which run to the nearby three-tiered Hien Lam Pavilion.
Then, it’s well worth wandering the outer streets to find beautiful gates, quiet courtyards, and open sections of the city walls by bike trip. Cycling is an excellent way to admire the area and get in touch with its people.

You'll be picked up by a shared transfer for a visit to the Cu Chi tunnels, located about 45 km away. These remarkable tunnels, stretching almost 250 kilometers in total, served as a refuge for over 16,000 Viet Cong guerrillas during various wars. Initially constructed during the French occupation of Vietnam, these tunnels gained significant notoriety during the Vietnam War, particularly in the conflict against American soldiers. The Cu Chi area witnessed intense battles during the war, enduring relentless carpet bombings, napalm attacks, and the use of defoliants by the Americans in an effort to dislodge the Viet Cong from their underground hideouts.
For a deeper understanding of the Vietnam War and its aftermath, consider a visit to the War Remnants Museum in the afternoon. Arguably the city's most significant museum, it offers visitors a candid albeit one-sided perspective of the war through three distinct exhibits. The first exhibit focuses on the weaponry and war machinery employed by US forces, many of which are exceptionally well-preserved. Another exhibit delves into the role of journalists during the war and the sacrifices they made to report on the conflict. The final exhibit is a somber reflection on the use of Agent Orange during the war, featuring graphic photographs depicting the devastating effects of this chemical weapon, painting a stark and brutal picture of the realities of war.
